The winner of the Ballon d’Or 2011 was unveiled Monday. As anticipated, the favorite Lionel Messi was crowned for the third consecutive time. The striker joined Barcelona Johan Cruyff (1971, 1973 and 1974), Marco Van Basten (1988, 1989 and 1992) and Michel Platini (1983, 1984 and 1985) in the legend and is the second player with the former French international to win the award three consecutive years. With 47.88% of the vote, well ahead of the Blaugrana striker of Real Madrid, Cristiano Ronaldo (21.60%), and teammate at Barca, Xavi (9.23%).
